Despite the bearish cryptocurrency landscape in 2019, blockchain projects and cryptocurrency influencers seem to be bolstering the technology with brazen advancements and optimistic views for the future.
This past year has been less fruitful when it comes to blockchain funding. While the first quarter of 2018 saw $15 million plowed into crypto, the same period in 2019 barely crossed the $3 million mark.
While easy blockchain funding may be slipping away for new startups, the top 100 crypto characters of 2019 demonstrate that the focus of the crypto space in 2019 tend to lean more toward pushing mass adoption and integrating blockchain into existing enterprise infrastructure.
This year’s list of crypto’s most influential people is as diverse as ever, with crypto innovation seeping in from all corners of the world. 2019 has seen technologists, investors, policymakers and visionaries from all walks of life entering the crypto space, making for an interesting year in terms of cryptocurrency endorsement and regulation. Changpeng Zhao, also known as "CZ", is the founder and CEO of Binance - the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange by trading volume. Binance has been very active this year from developing new products and services, such as DEX, country-specific exchanges to company acquisitions and even supporting governments with crypto adoption.
Jihan Wu is the CEO and co-founder of Bitmain, which is the world's largest computer chip company for bitcoin mining. Former president of PayPal, Marcus has sat in Coinbase’s Board of Directors since 2017 and was previously fulfilling the role of VP of Messaging Products at Facebook. Marcus now heads up Facebook’s Libra team - which could potentially introduce digital currencies to Facebook's billions of active users.
Brian Armstrong is the co-founder and CEO of Coinbase, one of the largest crypto exchanges in the world (its reported Coinbase holds 966,230 Bitcoin ($7B) in Cold Wallet). Prior to his involvement with the blockchain and Coinbase, Armstrong worked at Deloitte and Touche as an Enterprise Risk Management Consultant.
Vitaly Dmitriyevich "Vitalik" Buterin is the co-founder of Ethereum, the world's most popular smart contract platform that enables developers to build decentralized applications (at the time of wirting this, ETH has a market cap pf $2B). Prior to his development of Ethereum, Buterin was the co-founder of Bitcoin Magazine.
Garlinghouse is both the CEO and Chairman of Ripple Labs. This year, Ripple surpassed 300 partners, including over 115 banks worldwide. Having launched On-Demand Liquidity (ODL) for cross-border payments, Ripple now has more than 20 partners using XRP for ODL, including Moneygram, Western Union, and American Express.
Ex-Google engineer, Charlie Lee is the creator of Litecoin and MD of the Litecoin Foundation. Previously Director of Engineering at Coinbase, Lee now focuses full-time on Litecoin. To enhance fungibility and privacy of LTC, integration of MimbleWimble has begun, however Lee has recently announced a crowdfunding launch to fund the development.
Ex-CMO of Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), Loeffler is now the CEO of Bakkt, a subsidiary of ICE, focused on increasing institution and merchant access to digital assets. Having launched its Bitcoin Futures in Sep 2019, Bakkt reached an all-time monthly high of $37M within the first month. Prior to her 15 years at ICE, Loeffler served on the Board of Directors for Georgia Power Company.
Know affectionately at ‘Bitcoin Jesus’, Ver was an early investor and promoter of Bitcoin. While one of the five founders of the Bitcoin Foundation, in 2017 Ver was an avid supporter of the Bitcoin hard fork to create Bitcoin Cash. Brother, business partner, and rowing teammate of Tyler Winklevoss, Cameron also co-founded Winklevoss Capital Management and Gemini, where he is currently the President. Jean-Louis van der Velde is the CEO and co-founder of Bitfinix, one of the world's largest crypto exchanges. Prior to Bitfinix, Van der Velde has been the CEO and co-founder of several IT companies and is currently a lecturer at National Taiwan University of Science and Technology.
Brandon Chez is the founder of CoinMarketCap. CoinMarketCap is the #1 cryptocurrency information site in the world, providing cryptocurrency market cap and exchange data and rankings. CoinMarketCap has significant influence on the markets themselves.
Brock Pierce is the co-founder of a number of successful projects including Block.One, EOS Alliance, Tether, and Blockchain Capital. Founded in 2013, Blockchain Capital was the first venture capital firm focusing solely on blockchain. In 2017, Pierce spearheaded the development, fundraising, and launch of EOS through Blockchain Capital and Block.One, raising $4.1B at ICO.

Gavin Wood is the founder Parity Technologies, the company that develops centralised online services that enable institutional innovation which released the Parity Bitcoin technology stack. Prior to Parity, Wood was also the co-founder and former CTO of Ethereum.
Erik Voorhees is the founder and CEO of ShapeShift, the company that offers global trading of a variety of different digital assets via web and mobile platforms. Prior to Shapeshift, Voorhees served as head of marketing and communication at BitInstant and was partial owner of SatoshiDICE.
Jesse Powell is the CEO and Founder of Kraken Exchange, a popular digital asset exchange based out of the U.S. Prior to Kraken, Powell worked on and founded a number of different ventures,and previously ran an online gaming startup for more than a decade.

Prior to Arrington XRP Capital, he was the founder and former co-editor of TechCrunch, the blog covering tech and startups.
Jameson Lopp is the CTO of Casa, the leading provider of Lightning Bitcoin nodes and Bitcoin multisig key security. 2019 has seen Casa launch Casa Covenant, a tool for passing on Bitcoin in the event of the owner’s death. Lopp also founded Statoshi.info, a site that offers real-time node stats for Bitcoin.
Silbert is the founder and CEO of Digital Currency Group, an investment firm that funds, incubates, and launches companies looking to disrupt the global financial system. Silbert created the Bitcoin Investment Trust (BIT), and also previously founded SecondMarket, a platform for companies to raise capital.
Jeremy Allaire is the Founder, Chairman, and CEO of Circle, an enterprise blockchain platform for raising capital and building businesses. Allaire is also the Founder and Chairman of the Board of Directors of video hosting platform, Brightcove. Prior to this, Allaire worked as a CTO of Macromedia after it merged with his own company, Allaire Corporation.
Elizabeth Stark is the founder and CEO of Lightning Labs, a blockchain development startup. Stark is a fellow at Coin Center, the leading digital currency policy organization, and an advisor at Chia, a company building a new blockchain protocol. Prior to Lightning labs, Stark taught at Stanford and Yale University about the future of the internet.
Pieter Wullie an engineer and founder of Blockstream, the blockchain technology company that focuses on financial infrastructure. Prior to Blockstream, Wullie worked at Google as an engineer. Wullie is also known for his contribution and improvement Bitcoin core software, such as BIP, Libsecp256k1 and segwit.
Dominik Schiener is the co-founder of IOTA, a product focused on machine-to-machine payments and communication, and co-chairman of IOTA Foundation. Schiener’s poignant decentralized projects include: Identity on Bitcoin, a digital ID prototype; PublicVotes, an Ethereum-based voting system; DecentralWiki and a decentralized Wikipedia.
Auther Hayes is the CEO and co-founder of BitMEX, the platform for traders to trade Bitcoin derivatives. Prior to BitMEX, Hayes moved to Hong Kong to work for Deutsche Bank as a Synthetic Equity Trader. Hayes later joined Citi Bank as a Delta One Trader and was the head trader of Citi's Asian ETF offerings.
Eric Larchevêqe is the CEO and co-founder of Ledger, the Bitcoin security startup that focuses on building security solutions for blockchain-based applications as well as the chairman and co-founder of Coinhouse. Prior to ledger and Coinhouse, Larchevêqe founded la Maison du Bitcoin, a maker space for French entrepreneurs involved in crypto.
Charles Hoskinson is the CEO and founder of IOHK, the technology company that provides peer-to-peer financial services. Hoskinson is also the co-founder of Cardano. Prior to IOHK and Cardano, Hoskinson was the co-founder and ex CEO of Ethereum, moreover, Hoskinson established the Cryptocurrency Research Group in September 2013.
Brother of Charlie Lee, Bobby Lee is the co-founder and CEO of BTCChina, having invested his own money to enhance the company. Now on the Board of Directors of the Bitcoin Foundation, Lee previously worked in high-level tech positions for Microsoft, IBM, Walmart. This year, Lee developed Ballet, a credit card-style hardware wallet.
Dan Morehead is the founder and CEO of Pantera Capital Management, the investment fund focused on digital currency and blockchain tech. Prior to Pantera Capital, Morehead was the head of macro trading and CEO of Tiger Management as well as Global Head of FX options at Deutsche Bank in London.
Fred Ehrsam is the co-founder of Paradigm, the crypto asset investment firm. Prior to Paradigm, Ehrsam was the co-founder of Coinbase and was previously a foreign exchange trader at Goldman Sachs in New York where he traded and managed Goldman’s electronic market-making platform.
Emin Gün Sirer
Emin Gün Sirer is the CEO of Avalabs, a platform for assets, markets and decentralized applications as well as a professor at Cornell University and co-director at IC3. Prior to Avalabs, Sirer is best known for his contributions to operating systems, distributed systems, and fundamental cryptocurrency research.
Bryce Wilcox is the founder and CEO of Zcash, a cryptocurrency best known for its anonymity as it keeps senders, receivers private when publishing transactions on the public general ledger. He is also the founder and CEO of Least Authority Enterprises. Prior to this Zooko developed the Tahoe-LAFS, as well as the MojoNation P2P system.
Muneeb Ali is the CEO and co-founder of Blockstack, a New York-based decentralized computing network and app ecosystem company. Prior to blockstack, Ali attained his PhD in distributed systems from Princeton University.
Sergey Nazarov is the co-founder and CEO of Chainlink, a company that specialises in efficient smart-contracts on the blockchain that allows users to connect to any API and to make payments over a broad spectrum of commonly used methods.
Amber Baldet is the co-founder and CEO of Clovyr, a development company that uses blockchain for faster and more efficient development of new products. Before Clovyr, Baldet was an executive director in the blockchain program for J.P. Morgan, as well as serving as Chair of the working group for Enterprise Etherium Alliance.
Mike Belshe is the CEO and co-founder of BitGo, a cryptocurrency investment company that specialises in offering high-end investment options in crypto. Prior to BitGo, Belshe worked for Google and helped to develop Chrome. He also developed the SPDY protocol and HTTPS/2.0 that we use now.
Kathleen Breitman is the co-founder and CEO of Tezos, a blockchain smart contracts company that specialises in the use of on-chain protocols to stimulate network upgrades and growth. Prior to Tezos, Breitman worked for companies such as The Wall Street Journal and De Dicto.
Edward Moncada is the co-founder and CEO of Blockfolio, the world's most popular crypto portfolio tracker. Moncada previously co-founded Datablock, a data rights and ownership protocol. Up until last year, Moncada served as a Board Member for the DASH Foundation.
Rune Christensen is the co-founder and CEO of MakerDAO. MakerDao uses smart contracts that adapt to market movements to create the first stable digital currency, Dai, offered on the Ethereum blockchain. Prior to MakerDAO, Christensen co-founded Try China, an international recruitment company.
Bart Stephens is the co-founder and managing partner of Blockchain Capital, a successful venture firm in the blockchain industry boasting over $300M in assets. Prior to Blockchain Capital, Stephens co-founded the investment firm SIM and was the EVP of venture capital for Ivanhoe Capital Corporate.
Haipo Yang is the CEO of ViaBTC, a successful Bitcoin and cloud mining contractor. Prior to ViaBTC, Yang was among the earliest investors in bitcoin and has since built up a wealth of knowledge and experience in cryptocurrencies. Yang was also a developer at Tencent (a social media based company in China).
Co-founder and CEO of BitFury, Vavilov has led the full-service infrastructure company to become one of the most successful blockchain projects to date, with an annual turnover of $500 million last year. Prior to founding BitFury in 2011, Vavilov’s background was in software development.
Jake Brukhman is the managing director and CEO of CoinFund, a crypto fund focused on funding companies in all stages with cryptocurrency-based business models and boasting one of the earliest ever diversified crypto portfolios. Prior to CoinFund, Brukhman was a partner at Triton Research.
Hunter Horsely is the co-founder and CEO of Bitwise Asset Management, a crypto-based asset management company that specialises in rules-based asset trading. Prior to Bitwise Asset Management, Horsely was a product manager for content and ads at Instagram and then Facebook.
Josh Fraser is a co-founder and the CEO of Origin Protocol. Origin Protocol is a decentralised marketplace creation protocol that uses the Ethereum blockchain. Prior to Origin Protocol, Fraser co-founded a number of companies such as PriceSlash, Din, Torbit, and EventVue.
Zac Prince is the co-founder and CEO of Blockfi Lending. Blockfi Lending is a crypto-based lending platform that offers dollar loans to cryptocurrency holders. Prior to Blockfi, Prince founded Better Finance Guru. He also worked in senior positions in companies such as Cognical, Orchard Platform and Sociomantic Labs.
Justin Sun is the CEO of BitTorrrent and the founder of TRON, a crypto-platform built for the purpose of free global content distribution and access. TRON pursues the goal of using the blockchain system to create a free content entertainment protocol that is both innovative and decentralised. Prior to TRON, Sun founded the mobile social-media app Peiwo.
Eccentric technologist, John McAfee, was behind the world’s first antivirus software. Currently the CEO and Chief Executive Chair to MGT Capital Investment, McAfee convinced the company to pivot from gaming to cybersecurity and crypto mining. Concurrently, McAfee is the CEO for Luxcore, a crypto company focused on enterprise solutions.
AngelList Founder, CEO, and Chairman, Ravikant has made more than 120 investments in startups, including Kraken and Uber. Known for his advice for startups, Ravikant runs a popular startup website called Venture Hacks, and previously co-founded Vast.com and Epinions. Ravikant launched Coinlist in 2017, the crypto investor’s AngelList.
Andreas M. Antonopoulos
Andreas M. Antonopoulos is a Greek-British bitcoin advocate. He is a host on the Let's Talk Bitcoin podcast and has written a number of books on cryptocurrency. He is also the CTO of Third Key Solutions which offers consulting and cryptographic key management solutions for individuals and companies using decentralized digital currencies.
Having previously led growth teams for Facebook and Snapchat, Pompliano founded FullTilt Capital in 2016, where he served as the Managing Director. Co-founding Morgan Creek Digital Assets, the company acquired Full Tilt Capital. Morgan Creek Digital Assets recently announced their new $50 million blockchain fund.
Nick Szabo created what we know as smart contracts, which essentially make cryptocurrencies possible. He has used his education in law and computer sciences to create the bones of what we know as the cryptoworld today in the form of the earliest cryptocurrency, Bit Gold.

Jimmy Song is an advisor and instructor on Blockchain programing, lecturer at The University of Texas, a long-time Bitcoin fellow, a renowned author, and consultant. Prior to this Song was a principal architect at Paxos, as well as a VP of engineering for Armory technologies.
Ari Paul is the founder and CIO of BlockTower Capital, a successful crypto-based investment firm. Prior to BlockTower Capital Paul worked as both risk specialist and portfolio manager for the University of Chicago, handling a hedge portfolio in excess of $150 million.
Tim Draper is the founder of Draper Associates, a venture capital investment firm that focuses on new finance ventures in the seed stage. He is also the founder of DFJ, another venture fund, and is perhaps most famous for his 2014 purchase of 30,000 Bitcoins at a US government auction.
Ex-hedge fund manager, Novogratz, previously worked for Goldman Sachs and Fortress Investments before serving on the Federal Reserve Bank of New York’s Investment Advisory Committee. Novogratz is now the CEO of Galaxy Investment Partners, claiming more than 20% of his net worth is in cryptocurrency.
Don Tapscott is the co-founder and executive chairman of Blockchain Research Institute, an organisation dedicated to researching the impact of blockchain technology on the world. Tapscott also co-wrote the bestselling book The Blockchain Revolution.
Ran NueNer is the CEO of OnChain Capital, a cryto-assets and consulting company and is host of CNBC's widely-viewed CryptoTrader TV show. Prior to OnChain Capital, NueNer founded The Creative Council, a renowned and profitable activations agency.

John Whelan is the managing director of digital investment baking at Banco Santander, a multinational bank rated in the top 15 worldwide. Whelan is also a board member at Fnality International, and chairman of the board at Enterprise Etherium Alliance.
Tiffany Hayden is an expert on Ripple's XRP protocol and full-time blogger and is an independent adviser, that helps professionals and organizations in the finance industry understand Blockchain technology. Hayden is also the community manager for Edge.
