Spanish Authorities Capture AI-Investment Scammers

Spanish authorities have arrested six individuals involved in a global AI-driven investment scam that defrauded over $20 million from at least 208 victims.

Multifaceted Crimes

The scammers reportedly used deep-fake ads featuring national figures to lure victims into investing in fraudulent cryptocurrency schemes. After stealing the funds, they contacted victims twice more, posing as investment managers and officials offering to recover the money for a fee.

The fraudsters targeted victims based on algorithms, running ads on websites and social media to promote high-return, no-risk investments that turned out to be scams.

AI Scams On The Rise

Experts warn that AI is making scams more scalable and affordable, especially with the gradual implementation of new technologies courtesy of companies like OpenAI.

As part of the aforementioned arrests, the Spanish police seized phones, computers, and fake documents during a raid on the syndicate’s leader. Several other individuals linked to the plot have been identified internationally.
