Elliptic Launches Decode — An AI Agent That Answers On-Chain Risk Questions With Evidence

Hours of hop-tracing, answered in seconds — with Thinking Steps attached. The agent does not close the case.

A compliance analyst asks who an address is exposed to. A general chatbot invents a fluent paragraph. Elliptic’s Decode agent returns a ranked table, the query it ran, and the steps it took — so a second-line reviewer can check the work.

On 17 September 2026 (Business Wire), Elliptic launched Decode, an AI agent on its on-chain intelligence platform. Users ask natural-language questions about cryptoasset addresses and exposure; Decode answers in seconds and attaches evidence. It is currently live with government customers; private-sector availability is planned later in 2026.

The mechanism

Decode is built to Elliptic’s published “Elliptic Standard” for governing agentic AI in on-chain risk (announced the prior week). The product claims that matter for operators:

  1. Evidence, not vibes — answers come as ranked tables plus a plain-language summary; each answer carries the query that produced it and how the question was interpreted before it ran.
  2. Thinking Steps — method is examine-able rather than inferred; same question against same data reaches the same conclusion even if the summary wording differs.
  3. Human oversight by design — Decode does not close cases and does not choose where an investigation goes. It surfaces the next question; the analyst decides whether to follow.
  4. Batch / odd questions — useful on questions nobody built a report for; can run one question across a batch of addresses or cases to surface shared counterparties and repeat patterns.
  5. Data claim — runs on Elliptic’s labeled address graph (company says billions of labeled addresses / attributed intelligence since 2013), not raw chain alone.

Example prompts Elliptic publishes: who owns this address and what is it exposed to; top stablecoin transfers to sanctioned entities in a month; top counterparties of an exchange by volume; how often a stablecoin shows up in scam facilitation.

What the numbers mean

  • Seconds vs hours — Elliptic’s framing for specialist hop-tracing; treat as product claim, not a benchmark you can reproduce without their data.
  • Gov live / private later 2026 — availability constraint. Do not pitch Decode as a retail KYC chrome extension.
  • Elliptic Standard — governance peg for agentic risk tools; Decode is their first solution built to it. Pair mentally with AIUC certification/insurance (pending Thu pack) — different layer (investigation vs underwriting).

The operator lesson

If your stack already lets agents spend (x402, MCP wallets, CEX sub-accounts), Decode is the other side of the table: agents that investigate at machine speed while leaving liability with the human analyst. Ask vendors shipping “AI compliance copilots” for the same three artifacts Decode advertises — interpreted query, evidence table, and reproducible steps — before you let a model write a SAR narrative.

Do not confuse Decode with a wallet MCP that signs. It reads Elliptic’s intelligence graph. It does not move funds.
