Despite this, Trump maintained his narrative. In a Time interview, he stated Xi had called, but did not provide details of the conversation. When asked about it later, Trump evaded giving specifics, saying only, “I’ve spoken to him many times.”
No Resolution In Sight
Records show the last confirmed call between Trump and Xi was on January 17th, months ago. Meanwhile, China continued to reject the idea of negotiations. Hours before Trump’s Time interview, the Chinese Foreign Ministry issued a statement warning the U.S. not to mislead the public about trade talks.
In response to Trump’s tariffs, China raised its own duties on U.S. goods. Behind the scenes, China also reduced tariffs on certain U.S.-made semiconductors to ease pressure on its tech industry.
While Trump continues to suggest secret deals, China and his own administration paint a different picture, which includes no calls, no talks, and no quick resolution to the trade conflict.
