IMF Agreement
The latest acquisition brings the Central American country’s total BTC holdings to 6,088, valued at around $558 million based on current market prices. El Salvador had previously been buying one Bitcoin every day since November 2022.
The pause in acquisitions came after the country reached an agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which includes a 40-month Extended Fund Facility deal expected to bring in over $3.5 billion in financial aid during the program.
El Salvador Keeps Buying BTC
As part of the IMF deal, El Salvador agreed to modify its crypto-related policies, such as making Bitcoin acceptance optional for businesses in the private sector. In late January 2025, the country’s legislature approved changes to its Bitcoin law to meet these new conditions.
Beyond its regular purchases, El Salvador has made substantial Bitcoin acquisitions. After securing the IMF financing deal in December, the country added $1 million worth of Bitcoin to its reserves in a single transaction. On February 4th, it bought 11 Bitcoin worth more than $1 million.
