Utilizing a flash loan, the attackers bought 4.6 million Bone ShibaSwap (BONE) tokens, which allowed them to control a majority of the validator power. This control enabled the attacker to sign a malicious transaction that moved the funds out of the bridge.

Shiba Inu Responds

The Shiba Inu team responded swiftly. Kaal Dhairya announced that, in the wake of the attack, the Shibarium network had paused the stake and unstake functions to mitigate further risk. Additionally, the stake manager funds were moved into a hardware wallet controlled by a multisignature security protocol.

Dhairya emphasized that ensuring the security of the network and protecting user assets remained the team’s top priority. They have also enlisted the help of leading security firms, including Hexens, Seal 911, and PeckShield, to assist in the investigation of the breach.

K9 Starts Damage Control

On Monday, K9 Finance, a DeFi platform on the Shiba Inu ecosystem, communicated directly with the Shibarium bridge attacker via an on-chain message.

The message outlined the terms of the bounty and stated that it would remain open for 30 days, with a warning that the reward would decrease after seven days if the attacker failed to act.

As per K9’s official statement:

“We are offering 5 Ether ($23,000) for the safe return of the stolen assets. Settlement is atomic when we call recoverKnine(). If you call accept() we cannot cancel the deal. Code is law.”

In addition to this, Shiba Inu developer Kaal Dhairya confirmed that the team had contacted relevant authorities but was still open to negotiating with the attacker to recover the funds.

Market Reactions To The Exploit

The exploit sent shockwaves through the Shiba Inu ecosystem, with several tokens experiencing significant price declines. Shiba Inu’s native token, SHIB, saw a drop from $0.0000145 on Saturday to $0.0000131, a 7% decrease.

Security Measures & Ongoing Investigation

As a response to the breach, Shiba Inu developers have taken various precautions to secure the platform. By pausing the stake/unstake functions and transferring funds into multisig-controlled hardware wallets, the team aims to safeguard any remaining funds.

In addition, Shiba Inu has enlisted several cybersecurity firms, including Hexens, Seal 911, and PeckShield, to assist in investigating the attack and prevent further breaches.

The team is also in direct contact with law enforcement authorities and is cooperating fully to trace the attackers behind the Shibarium bridge exploit.
