The CFTC Chairman role remains vacant, nearly a year into Trump’s second term.
Several pro-crypto candidates, including Michael Selig and Tyler Williams, are under consideration.
Industry insiders are watching closely, especially as the CFTC may gain more power in crypto regulation.
Legal scholars are skeptical of merging the CFTC with the SEC due to ethical and administrative concerns.
A Senate confirmation will be required, meaning a new chair may not be in place for some time.
The next head of the CFTC will likely play a pivotal role in shaping U.S. crypto policy. With Congress considering a new market infrastructure bill, the CFTC could soon receive expanded authority over digital assets.

As such, the appointment of a crypto-friendly CFTC Chairman is seen as critical for the future of blockchain innovation in the U.S. Several names have emerged as frontrunners, each with unique backgrounds and positions on digital assets.
Chief Counsel to the SEC’s Crypto Task Force.
Selig has a strong legal background in digital assets. He previously worked at Willkie Farr & Gallagher and Perkins Coie, where he focused on crypto regulation and policy. Selig has been a vocal critic of the SEC’s “regulation by enforcement” approach.
He has called for a “do no harm” approach to crypto innovation and is seen as a strong supporter of regulatory clarity.
Counselor to U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
Williams brings both public and private sector experience. He served as Galaxy Digital’s Global Head of Policy and advised various crypto-related initiatives through his consultancy work.
Williams co-authored the White House’s crypto report, advocating for a “durable regulatory framework” that fosters innovation without compromising consumer protections.
Independent Financial Consultant.
Sommers served as a CFTC Commissioner from 2007–2013, where she chaired the Global Markets Advisory Committee. She later joined FTX.US’s board, although she has remained relatively quiet on crypto in public statements.
While she hasn’t been outspoken, her role at FTX.US suggests she recognizes the importance of engaging with the crypto space and building sound regulation.
Chairman, National Credit Union Administration (NCUA).
A longtime policy advisor, Hauptman has worked with Senator Tom Cotton and the Senate Banking Committee. Though not directly involved with crypto, his emphasis on innovation within financial systems signals openness to blockchain technology.
No explicit crypto stance, but his regulatory style leans pro-innovation, aligning with crypto-friendly approaches.
Partner at Milbank LLP.
Stirling specializes in white-collar and derivatives law. He represents the prediction market Kalshi and has served in leadership roles within legal derivatives communities.
Stirling has stated the CFTC should have a “primary role in regulating the digital assets marketplace,” signaling strong support for CFTC-led crypto oversight.
A more radical proposal has emerged, consolidating the SEC and CFTC under one leadership structure. Some insiders have floated the idea of making current SEC Chair Paul Atkins also serve as the CFTC Chairman.

However, legal and ethical concerns abound. According to Stanford Law Professor Anne Joseph O’Connell, SEC statutes prohibit commissioners from holding other employment, raising doubts about the legality of such a move.
Additionally, administrative law expert Nick Bednar warns that consolidating such power could damage governance and reduce the effectiveness of both agencies. “Centralizing control comes with a significant cost to administrative capacity,” he noted.
The nomination process for any CFTC Chairman will require Senate confirmation, a step that could take several months.
With regulatory reform looming, crypto markets remain on edge, eager to see if a pro-innovation leader will take the helm at the CFTC.
While no official nominee has been confirmed, Michael Selig and Tyler Williams are considered frontrunners due to their crypto expertise and policy backgrounds.
The CFTC may soon gain expanded authority over digital assets. A pro-crypto chairman could support clearer regulations, foster innovation, and limit enforcement-driven oversight.
Some insiders have discussed consolidating the two agencies, but legal barriers and ethical concerns make such a merger unlikely in the short term.
As of now, the White House has not formally announced a nominee for CFTC Chairman.
