Oregon AG’s Lawsuit Targets 31 Cryptocurrencies

Just before Coinbase launched CFTC-regulated XRP futures on its U.S. derivatives platform, the Oregon Attorney General (AG) filed a lawsuit claiming that 31 cryptocurrencies, including XRP, UNI, LINK, AAVE, and MKR, are unregistered securities.

XRP Not A Security

The lawsuit expands on the SEC’s original complaint, which listed 13 tokens, and accuses Coinbase of offering them as investment contracts through its platforms.

Notably, the case includes XRP, despite Coinbase delisting it after the SEC sued Ripple in December 2020 and only relisting it after a July 2023 ruling that XRP is not a security.

Renewed Debate

The lawsuit comes as Coinbase recently began offering XRP futures trading, signaling confidence in the token’s regulatory status.

Additionally, the lawsuit has also sparked renewed debate over the legal classification of digital assets in the U.S.
