Conor McGregor Wants An Irish Bitcoin Reserve

Former UFC champion and now Irish presidential candidate Conor McGregor is championing a bold new idea: establishing a national Bitcoin (BTC) reserve in Ireland. The move, he argues, would restore financial independence to the public, aligning with cryptocurrency’s founding principles.

Conor McGregor took to X (formerly Twitter) on Friday to express his support for an Irish Bitcoin reserve, saying:

“An Irish Bitcoin strategic reserve will give power to the people’s money.”

This statement comes as McGregor ramps up his independent campaign for the Irish presidency, a race that has already drawn significant attention due to his celebrity status, controversial views, and unconventional policy proposals.

A Push For Financial Sovereignty Through Bitcoin

In a follow-up post, McGregor invited members of the crypto community to collaborate with him on the proposed initiative. Notably, he reached out to Anthony Pompliano, a reputable Bitcoin evangelist and host of The Pomp Podcast, stating:

“We need the greatest minds for this BTC Reserve. Message me and let’s chat on my space.”

His open invitation to experts has already sparked buzz in the crypto world. David Bailey, a crypto advisor to President Donald Trump, expressed interest in the initiative. McGregor responded positively:

“David, message me, let’s discuss your ideas!”

The Irish fighter plans to elaborate on his vision during an upcoming X Spaces session, where he aims to gather support and ideas from leading figures in the Bitcoin space.

McGregor’s Presidential Campaign: A Controversial Start

McGregor declared his independent run for president in March 2025, focusing on tough-on-crime policies and stricter immigration controls. While his campaign has garnered attention, it is not without controversy.

Ireland’s next presidential election is scheduled to take place no later than November 11th, 2025, when the term of current President Michael D. Higgins comes to an end.

Despite his popularity, McGregor faces an uphill battle. Running as an independent in Ireland’s political system, particularly with a policy as radical as creating a national Bitcoin reserve, presents a significant challenge.

Only a handful of nations, notably the United States, El Salvador, and Bhutan, have formally established Bitcoin reserves or similar strategic holdings. For Ireland to follow suit, it would require substantial political will, regulatory frameworks, and public trust.

Past Scandals & A Faltering Crypto History

McGregor’s political aspirations have recently been buoyed by a high-profile visit to the White House, where he met with Donald Trump and received public endorsement. This meeting elevated his international political profile but has done little to quiet domestic criticism.

In Ireland, McGregor remains under heavy scrutiny. He was recently found liable in a civil sexual assault case, though he has filed an appeal. Additionally, he has faced investigations related to alleged hate speech.

His previous foray into crypto also ended in disappointment. In April 2025, McGregor backed a crypto project known as REAL, a gaming-related token developed by Real World Gaming. The project launched a pre-sale campaign with a $1 million funding goal but fell short, raising just $392,315 in 28 hours. All participants were refunded, and the project was shelved.

Can Bitcoin Become A Cornerstone of Irish Sovereignty?

While the concept of a Bitcoin reserve may seem outlandish to traditional economists, it aligns with growing trends toward decentralization, especially among younger voters. Countries like El Salvador have already made Bitcoin legal tender, and discussions about national Bitcoin strategies are taking place in the U.S. and parts of Europe.

McGregor’s advocacy may not single handedly change Ireland’s monetary policy, but it raises important questions about financial sovereignty, currency innovation, and how cryptocurrency might play a role in future governance.

McGregor Betting Big On Bitcoin & The Ballot Box

Conor McGregor’s vision of an Irish Bitcoin reserve is bold, controversial, and highly unconventional. Whether this proposal gains traction or fades into political theater, it marks a notable moment where blockchain technology and national politics intersect.

As McGregor prepares for his upcoming X Spaces session and continues his presidential campaign, Ireland, and the world, will be watching closely to see if the fighter-turned-politician can turn crypto hype into a national movement.
