New Malware Targets Crypto Wallets Via Google Chrome

Microsoft has flagged a new security threat involving ‘StilachiRAT’ malware, which targets 20 crypto wallets accessed via Google Chrome extensions.

Targeting Crypto Wallets

The malware can remotely access PCs to steal user credentials, affecting wallets like Phantom, MetaMask, Trust, and Coinbase. Though not widespread, Microsoft urges users to take precautions to protect their crypto assets.

Moreover, Phantom Wallet has already advised users to use password managers, update antivirus software, and avoid copy-pasting private keys. Elsewhere, Lumma and AMOS crypto-stealing malware has recently been distributed via Reddit posts, mainly targeting Windows and Mac users.

Prioritizing Security

Bybit lost $1.5 billion last month in a breach by North Korean hackers, namely the Lazarus Group, accounting for half of the reported crypto losses in 2024.

Hacks now make up 70% of lost funds, far surpassing scams. Less than $500 million of over $3 billion in lost funds have been recovered, emphasizing the need for strong early security measures.
