Mixed Reactions

Democrats like Chuck Schumer supported the bill, arguing that blocking it would risk a harmful shutdown. He stated, “As bad as the CR is, I believe allowing Trump more power through a shutdown is worse.”

Schumer’s decision earned praise from Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson but drew criticism from within his party. Some Democrats, including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, opposed the bill, while others, like Hakeem Jeffries, refrained from expressing confidence in Schumer’s leadership.

A Necessary Decision

Despite the backlash, Schumer defended his decision as necessary to protect his party. Progressives remain opposed to cuts to federal agencies, while moderates focus on defending Medicaid and opposing Trump’s tariffs.

The Senate also passed a measure granting Washington, D.C. more control over spending, pending House approval.
