OpenAI Will Release New “Open” Language Model

OpenAI is set to release an "open" version of its language model this year, allowing developers to run it on their own hardware.

First ‘Open-Weight’ Model

CEO Sam Altman took to X (Twitter) to announce the upcoming launch of a powerful “open-weight” language model with reasoning capabilities.

Before the release, OpenAI plans to gather feedback to ensure its utility. This marks the first “open-weight” model since GPT-2 in 2019.

Looking Ahead

Altman shared that developer events for the GPT-2 model will start in San Francisco, followed by sessions in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region. He expressed excitement over seeing how developers and organizations use the model, especially when running it privately.

An open-weight model allows public access for modification and deployment, unlike the fully closed GPT-3 and GPT-4 models. The announcement also comes as OpenAI plans to release GPT-4.5 and GPT-5 soon.
