The Trump Administration Looks To Ban DeepSeek

The Trump administration may block DeepSeek’s access to U.S. technology or ban its services for American users going forward.

OpenAI Vs. DeepSeek

DeepSeek’s release of DeepSeek-V3, a powerful open-source chatbot developed for just $6 million, raised alarms due to its performance and low cost compared to U.S. competitors like OpenAI.

A U.S. Select Committee report on April 16th accused DeepSeek of funneling American user data to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and unlawfully using U.S. AI models in its training.

The report also suggests DeepSeek may have used 60K Nvidia chips, including 20K restricted under export controls.

Tariff War

The development comes amid heightened trade tensions, with the U.S. imposing tariffs on China and restricting technology exports. China has retaliated with tariffs on American imports.

“We now know this tool exploited U.S. AI models and used restricted Nvidia chips,” said Committee Chairman John Moolenaar. “American innovation should not fuel adversaries’ ambitions.”
